Final Work
"Whiplash" Title Sequence, made in After Effects
•••••
The Process
My approach for this project was to first isolate the message that the title sequence would communicate. The design would reflect the film’s sense of obsessive drive and unexpected bursts of emotion. After rewatching the movie and brainstorming through mind maps, I identified the driving concepts I would explore. The soundtrack selection was critical to the success of the sequence. I sourced a composition from Artlist and used After Effects to edit it down to its most relevant passages.
Next, I illustrated animation thumbnails to flesh out the pacing of the sequence. After incorporating feedback from my peers and instructor, the work on After Effects began. In my final animation, I employed abrupt color and position changes, transforming typefaces, and a mixture of subtle and overt rhythmic movements.
